Accessibility settings in Internet Explorer

In Internet Explorer you can specify the text size, styles and colours of web pages even if the author of the web page has already specified these. You can also specify the colour used to indicate links in web pages.

The first step is to turn off default colours, text styles and sizes specified by the web author:

  1. On the Tools menu select Internet Options to show the Internet Properties dialog.
  2. From the Internet Properties dialog select the General tab.
  3. In the General tab select the Accessibility button to open the Accessibility dialog.
  4. In the Accessibility dialog select the 'Ignore colours specified on web pages', 'Ignore font styles specified on web pages' and 'Ignore font size specified on web pages' checkboxes.

Having done this, to increase the text size used on web pages:


  1. On the View menu, select Text Size and then select the desired text size.

To change the font used on web pages:
  1. On the Tools menu select Internet Options to show the Internet Properties dialog.
  2. From the Internet Properties dialog select the General tab.
  3. In the General tab select the Fonts button to open the Fonts dialog.
  4. In the Fonts dialog change the Web Page Font to Arial.

To change the text colours used on web pages:
  1. On the Tools menu select Internet Options to show the Internet Properties dialog.
  2. From the Internet Properties dialog select the General tab.
  3. In the General tab select the Colours button to open the Colours dialog.
  4. In the Colours dialog you can select to use the Windows colour scheme, change the foreground and background colour and change the link colours.

Accessibility Settings in Netscape Navigator

Using Netscape Navigator you can zoom in or out of a page to change the text size. You can also specify the colours of web pages and the colours used to indicate links.


To change the magnification used with web pages:
  1. Press CTRL + NUMPAD MINUS to decrease the magnification.
  2. Press CTRL + NUMPAD PLUS to increase the magnification.

To change the text colours used on web pages:
  1. On the Edit menu select Preferences to show the Preferences dialog.
  2. From the Preferences dialog open the Appearance Category and select the Colours sub-category to show the Colours settings.
  3. From the Colours settings, you can select to use the Windows colour scheme, change the foreground and background colour and change the link colours.
  4. From the Colours settings, in the 'When a web page provides its own colours and backgrounds section' select the 'Use my chosen colours, ignoring the colours and background image specified' checkbox.

Accessibility Settings in Opera

Opera offers enhanced keyboard navigation and screen magnification. Using Opera you can change the text size, styles and colours of web pages.


To increase the text size used on web pages:
  1. Press NUMPAD MINUS to reduce the font size.
  2. Press NUMPAD PLUS to increase the font size.

To change the text colours used on web pages:
  1. On the File menu select Preferences to show the Preferences dialog.
  2. From the Preferences dialog select Fonts and Colours to show the Fonts and Colours settings.
  3. From the Fonts and Colours settings you can change the colours for individual text elements, change the background colour and change the links colours.
